New Delhi: Aiming to address the energy crunches in China, the multi-billion dollar Myanmar-China natural gas pipeline is now functioning. The initiative involving investments of six players from four countries, including India will carry natural gas and petroleum from the coastal port of Myanmar to China’s Southwest Yunnan Province.

The 870 km long pipeline is designed to equip an annual capacity of 22 million tonnes for the oil pipeline and 12 billion cubic metres for the gas pipeline. The pipeline which has now started gas delivery to China, will carry petroleum and natural gas from Middle East to Myanmar and from there will be pumped to China. As per the industry experts, the pipelines will satisfy a quarter of China’s natural gas demands every year and is expected to generate US$ 1.5 billion to Myanmar each year.
